His batting average hovered nearly 200 points below his career average of .343, and the Boston Braves' pitchers were upset at his inability to run down even the easiest of fly balls. He couldn't run, couldn't field, couldn't hide in a sport that was 35 years away from having a designated hitter.

Sele worked seven shutout innings, Jeff Kent and Rafael Furcal had three hits each, and the Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 7-1 Wednesday night for their seventh straight victory.

Andruw Jones hit a pair of two-run homers and Chipper Jones had four singles and scored three runs to lead the Braves to a 10-6 win over the Padres on Wednesday night.

Farnsworth struck out David Ortiz in the eighth _ the fourth time the slugger fanned Wednesday night _ and New York held on to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-6, overcoming another rocky outing by Randy Johnson.
