ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals lost another catcher, and kept on winning. Pinch hitter So Taguchi singled over a drawn-in outfield in the ninth inning for his second straight game-winning hit in a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Hoffman saves 499th as Padres take first

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Marcus Giles singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Trevor Hoffman moved within one save of becoming the first big leaguer with 500 for his career as the San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 Tuesday night to re-claim first place in the NL West.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - It only took Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost a few moments to remember a closer as dominant as Francisco Cordero has been this season. "Rollie was pretty good in '81," Yost said of his former Brewers teammate, Rollie Fingers, who became the first reliever in major-league history to win the AL Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Awards in the same season.

The play at the plate was close _ replays show Batista might have beaten the tag _ but the call was out in what eventually became a 7-6 victory for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
