Floyd gets what he signed for; Cubs win

CHICAGO (AP) - When he signed with the Chicago Cubs in the offseason, hometown guy Cliff Floyd envisioned joining a high-powered offense on the North Side. The last two games at Wrigley Field were what Floyd had in mind.
 
Ripken, Gwynn: Bonds should be All-Star

NEW YORK (AP) - Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn think it's a no-brainer: Barry Bonds deserves to be on the NL All-Star team. "Yes, there's a shadow that's hanging over top of him. The commissioner and Hank Aaron are torn whether they should celebrate the breaking of the all-time home run record," Ripken said Tuesday. "But when I think of Barry, I think of him as an All-Star player."
 
Bonds to give Hall of Fame an artifact

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Barry Bonds agreed Tuesday to provide the Hall of Fame with an artifact when he breaks Hank Aaron's record with his 756th home run, perhaps a batting helmet.
 
Cirillo's 'flukey' single lifts Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - In a game as well pitched as this one, even Jeff Cirillo thought it was a bit of a shame to win it the way he did. Gimpy knees and all, Cirillo limped off the bench and blooped a bases-loaded single in the 12th inning to lift the Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
 
Estrada's grand slam helps Brewers rally

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers capitalized on a big break while the Houston Astros can't seem to catch one. Johnny Estrada's grand slam highlighted a nine-run sixth inning and the Brewers rallied to beat the Houston Astros 11-5 on Tuesday night.
 
Ryan's first career homer lifts Cards

NEW YORK (AP) - Brendan Ryan's first career home run was huge for the St. Louis Cardinals. Ryan connected in the 11th inning and the Cardinals snapped the New York Mets' four-game winning streak with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night.

On a night when rookie Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered twice, the slumping Jones provided the most welcome hit of all with a three-run shot that carried the Braves to a 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.

Thomson tops Angels to win Royals' debut

(AP) - When John Thomson got the call last week from his agent and was told that the Kansas City Royals wanted to sign him, it didn't dawn on him that his new manager was going to be his old one. The reunion of Thomson and Buddy Bell went well. The right-hander won in his Royals debut, outpitching John Lackey in a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.
 
Penny dominates D'backs as Dodgers win

PHOENIX (AP) - Dodgers manager Grady Little gave ace Brad Penny an extra day off so he could face NL West leader Arizona in the opener of a four-game series. Penny made his manager look smart. Extending his dominance of the Diamondbacks, Penny earned his 10th victory to help Los Angeles beat Arizona 8-1 on Monday night.
