'Red Alert Squad' helps Padres hold first

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Somebody has to win the weak NL West, and the San Diego Padres figure it might as well be them. If the Padres do hold on to first place and reach the playoffs for the first time since their World Series season of 1998, they should certainly thank a group of reserves known as the "Red Alert Squad." If it weren't for such a strong bench, the Padres likely would be slogging along under .500 like everyone else in the division.

Red Sox, Yankees ready to renew rivalry

Ratings for All-Star game strike out again

NEW YORK (AP) - Ratings for baseball's All-Star game hit a new low for the second straight year. The American League's 7-5 victory over the National League in Detroit received an 8.1 rating and 14 share on FOX, Nielsen Media Research said Wednesday, down 8 percent from the 8.8 rating for the AL's 9-4 win last year in Houston.

Tejada and Teixeira lead AL over NL, 7-5

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Tejada, Mark Teixeira and their American League teammates gave a new-look All-Star game the same old result. Tejada homered off John Smoltz to start the scoring, Teixeira added a two-run drive off Dontrelle Willis and the AL overcame Kenny Rogers' bumpy inning to beat the NL 7-5 Tuesday night for its eighth straight win.
