Report: Athletics reach new stadium deal

FREMONT, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics reached a deal with Cisco Systems Inc. to build a new ballpark in Fremont, according to city officials who met with the team's owner Wednesday.
 
Back in Black: Padres hire Bud Black

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Padres found their new manager just up the freeway. Bud Black was hired to replace Bruce Bochy, giving the Los Angeles Angels' pitching coach his first major league managing job _ and drastically reducing his commute. Black lives in exclusive Rancho Santa Fe just north of San Diego.
 
Sheffield 'blocked' from Steinbrenner

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sheffield said he's being blocked by "middle men" from speaking with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner about his desire to stay in New York and will comply with the team's request to form a list of clubs he'd prefer to be traded to.

Former star pitcher Johnny Sain dies

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (AP) - Johnny Sain, a three-time All-Star who teamed with Warren Spahn to make up one of baseball's most fabled pitching tandems, died Tuesday. He was 89.
