Bonds' options may be few, far between

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Courthouse by day, batter's box by night for Barry Bonds? It could happen. Or, the home run king's career could be over altogether. Bonds didn't have a long list of suitors before being indicted Thursday. Now the slugger's best bet for 2008 might just be a move across San Francisco Bay to the Oakland Athletics _ that is, if they still want him.

Bonds' lawyers to attack steroid test

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - "I've never seen these documents," Barry Bonds said. He was testifying before a federal grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO, and had just been shown what prosecutors say was a positive steroid test conducted on a player named Barry B. "I've never seen these papers," Bonds repeated, according to Thursday's indictment charging Bonds with perjury and obstruction of justice.

Braves make offer to pitcher Tom Glavine

ATLANTA (AP) - The Braves made an offer to Tom Glavine on Friday, moving quickly to lock up a deal that will allow the left-hander to finish his career in Atlanta. Just two days after meeting with Glavine's agent in Phoenix, Braves general manager Frank Wren proposed a contract to the 41-year-old pitcher, who likely will command somewhere between $8 million and $10 million for the 2008 season.

Rivera wants Yanks to offer extra year

NEW YORK (AP) - The Yankees are waiting for Mariano Rivera. The 38-year closer hasn't accepted a $45 million, three-year offer from New York, and the Yankees say Rivera's agent, Fernando Cuza, wants general manager Brian Cashman to offer a fourth season.

Dealers: Bonds memorabilia hard to sell

CHICAGO (AP) - Ralph DeSantis started taking a baseball signed by Barry Bonds to memorabilia shows a while back, hoping someone would meet his $150 asking price. Two years later, no sale. DeSantis doesn't figure he'll do much better this weekend, either, now that baseball's home run champion has been indicted. "I'm probably overstocked with one baseball," he said.

Reds broadcaster Joe Nuxhall dies at 79

CINCINNATI (AP) - Joe Nuxhall, the youngest major leaguer at age 15 and later a beloved broadcaster as "the ol' left-hander" in Cincinnati, has died. He was 79. Nuxhall died Thursday night while hospitalized for treatment of pneumonia, the team said. He was awaiting surgery to insert a pacemaker, and had been slowed by a recurrence of cancer since September.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Padres general manager Kevin Towers had a good feeling about Jake Peavy before he'd even seen the right-hander throw a pitch. Towers sat next to Peavy in the stands at Class A Fort Wayne back in 2000 as the 19-year-old charted pitches during a game. The GM was beyond impressed with the youngster's observations.
