INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Without Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts' high-powered offense provided little pop. J.P. Losman didn't get much out of Buffalo's offense, either. Losman threw a TD pass and the Bills returned a blocked punt for a score in a 17-10 victory Saturday night over the Colts, who used Manning for just three snaps in an ugly preseason game.

Aug 13 2005 11:20PM (CT)
MANKATO, Minn. (AP) - A small plaque lies before a tree planted in Korey Stringer's memory at Minnesota Vikings training camp. "In Memory of Big K," it reads, honoring the beloved right tackle who died four years ago from heatstroke. There was no way for trainers to monitor players' core temperatures on that sweltering July day when Stringer collapsed, no definitive way to tell that his massive body was overheating beyond its threshold.

Bears not panicking over Grossman's injury
Aug 13 2005 10:39AM (CT)
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Chicago Bears insisted Rex Grossman's broken ankle has not put the franchise in panic mode. "We're going with the hand that we dealt ourselves," general manager Jerry Angelo said. "We said that going in and we're comfortable with it. If we're contingent on just one player then obviously we didn't build this team to win."

Holmgren sees breakout season for Seahawks
Aug 13 2005 2:46AM (CT)
CHENEY, Wash. (AP) - Funny how a coach goes from genius to dummy and maybe back again, depending on his players and record. Joe Montana, Steve Young and Brett Favre made Mike Holmgren look positively brilliant _ or was it vice versa? Either way, in San Francisco and Green Bay, they took regular trips to the Super Bowl.
