Bulls down Pistons, clinch playoff spot

CHICAGO (AP) - Kirk Hinrich's first attempt missed. His next two were on target, and a few seconds later, the Chicago Bulls let out a big sigh of relief. Hinrich hit two of three free throws with 2.8 seconds left, and the Chicago Bulls clinched their third straight playoff berth, pulling out an 83-81 victory over the Detroit Pistons after blowing a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter on Thursday night.

DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Mavericks were back home without a break after their first 6-0 road trip and Dirk Nowitzki was out after hurting his ankle in the first half. The Milwaukee Bucks, in the running for a lottery draft pick instead a playoff spot, wanted the upset. None of that kept the Mavericks from winning their 60th game, 105-103 to match their franchise record Wednesday night.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Just because the Houston Rockets have clinched a playoff spot, that doesn't necessarily translate into extra rest for Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. McGrady scored 27 points in slightly less than 40 minutes and Yao had 24 points and 15 rebounds during a foul-plagued 34 minutes, leading the Rockets to a 92-87 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night.
 
Sweet Lew proving he's among the elite

DENVER (AP) - Embroidered in yellow thread on the side of Rashard Lewis' left Nike shoe was his nickname _ Sweet Lew. The Seattle forward lived up to the moniker in the SuperSonics' 100-97 win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night. Lewis scored 33 points _ including 13 in the fourth quarter _ and grabbed 10 rebounds.
 
Birthday present: Jazz clinch Northwest

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Jazz helped coach Jerry Sloan celebrate his 65th birthday with a division title. After suffering through the only three lottery seasons in his 19 years with Utah, Sloan saw his team clinch the Northwest Division championship Wednesday night.
