Devils' Brodeur earns 100th shutout

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Judging from their performance Friday night, maybe the New Jersey Devils should schedule a few more jersey retirement ceremonies. After they made former defenseman Scott Stevens the first player in franchise history to have his number retired, the Devils played one of their best games of the season in a 3-0 shutout of Carolina, the team with the NHL's best record.
 
Panthers hand Thrashers 7th straight loss

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Panthers won a game they had to have and extended the Thrashers' slump. Chris Gratton scored twice, Jon Sim had the go-ahead goal in the third period and the Panthers beat Atlanta 5-2 Friday night, handing the Thrashers their seventh straight loss.
 
Capitals top Leafs as Ovechkin returns

WASHINGTON (AP) - With rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin back in the lineup for Washington, the Capitals were at the top of their game. Ovechkin picked up an assist, Chris Clark and Ben Clymer each had a goal and an assist and the Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Friday night.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Brian Rolston was more impressed by his goalie than with his game-winning goal. Manny Fernandez was perfect in the shootout and Rolston scored the only goal to lift the Minnesota Wild to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
 
Blue Jackets beat Oilers in shootout

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Jason Chimera celebrated his return home by beating his former team. The Edmonton native and former Oilers forward scored in the eighth round of a shootout to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 2-1 win over the Oilers on Thursday night.
 
Senators score 3 short-handed goals in win

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Against the high-scoring Senators, power plays were no advantage for Pittsburgh. Daniel Alfredsson scored twice, including one of the Senators' three short-handed goals, and Ottawa defeated the Penguins 7-2 on Thursday night.
 
Reinprecht scores game winner for Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Steve Reinprecht made quite a first impression on his new coach. Less than 24 hours after being traded to Phoenix, Reinprecht scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Coyotes a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
