Backstrom turns away Stars in shootout

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - When the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars get together, 65 minutes is rarely enough. The teams went to shootout for the third time in four games this season, with Minnesota earning the 2-1 victory on Tuesday night to avoid a sweep by the Stars and climb within two points of sixth-place Dallas in the Western Conference.
 
Stastny nets 2 as Avalanche beats Flames

DENVER (AP) - Paul Stastny had two goals and an assist, and Peter Budaj stopped 33 shots _ including 16 in the third period _ as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Tuesday night. Marek Svatos scored the winning goal 1:24 into the third period.
 
Higgins injured after he helps beat Caps

MONTREAL (AP) - The Montreal Canadiens hope they haven't lost Christopher Higgins to injury again just as he was beginning to regain his scoring touch. Higgins and Michael Ryder each scored two goals and rookie goalie Jaroslav Halak won his second straight start as Montreal beat the Washington Capitals 5-3 on Tuesday night.
 
Legace, Blues hold off Blue Jackets

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Lee Stempniak and Doug Weight scored and Manny Legace stopped both Columbus shootout attempts to give the St. Louis Blues a 5-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
 
Devils battle to 2-1 win over Rangers

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Playing the New York Rangers is usually enough motivation for New Jersey Devils. Seeing Sean Avery manhandle goalie Martin Brodeur gave the Devils added incentive. Zach Parise scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, Brodeur made 35 saves, and the Devils beat the Rangers 2-1 on Tuesday night.
 
Thrashers surge past Hurricanes 3-1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Atlanta Thrashers' third-period scoring flurry helped them accomplish a rare feat against the Carolina Hurricanes. Ilya Kovalchuk, Marian Hossa and Eric Boulton scored in the third to rally the Thrashers to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night, handing the Hurricanes their first loss when leading after two periods.
 
Senators give Murray his 600th victory

OTTAWA (AP) - Mike Comrie and Dean McAmmond scored in the shootout to lead Ottawa to a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night and give Senators coach Bryan Murray his 600th NHL victory.
 
Sabres' power play dominates Flyers

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - For the first time in more than two weeks, the Buffalo Sabres didn't need dramatics to win. Having played six consecutive one-goal games, including three shootouts, the Sabres got a goal and two assists from Daniel Briere and connected three times on power plays to put away the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 on Tuesday night.
 
Leafs can't get past Bruins' Thomas

TORONTO (AP) - The Boston Bruins are doing their part to keep the team together through the trading deadline. Tim Thomas made 43 saves for his third shutout of the season, Jason York scored his first NHL goal in three years, and the Bruins gained ground with a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.
 
Avalanche's Leopold will miss 4 weeks
