Sharks beat Avs to bolster playoff hopes

DENVER (AP) - Marcel Goc had a playoff flashback and saw the future all at once. Goc broke a third-period tie with a rebound goal past rookie Peter Budaj, and the San Jose Sharks bolstered their playoff hopes with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.

Blackhawks hand Preds 6th loss in 7 games

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks used simple fundamentals to beat the Nashville Predators. Rene Bourque had a goal and two assists, and the Blackhawks scored four times in the first period of a 4-3 victory Wednesday night. The Predators lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Maple Leafs stay alive, beating Islanders

TORONTO (AP) - The Maple Leafs still have a shot to make the Eastern Conference playoffs. The New York Islanders do not. Darcy Tucker ended a 16-game scoring drought with two goals, and Alexei Ponikarovsky snapped a tie with 2:02 remaining to give Toronto a 3-2 victory over the Islanders and move the Maple Leafs within six points of Tampa Bay for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Scott Mellanby is doing the best he can to extend the Atlanta Thrashers season. Mellanby, a 20-year veteran who is nearing the end of his career, scored a power-play goal at 6:27 of the third period to snap a tie and help the Thrashers beat the Florida Panthers 5-2 Wednesday night.

Elias scores hat trick as Devils prevail

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Patrik Elias returned from the Olympics with bruised ribs and a scoring slump. He broke out Wednesday night with three goals and two assists to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Elias had only three goals and six assists in the previous 13 games.
