ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Modano and Brad Richards scored 55 seconds apart in the third period to lift the Dallas Stars to a 5-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night and give them a 2-0 series lead over the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Held without a shot until late in the third period, the league's leading scorer stole the puck and netted the tiebreaking goal with 4 1/2 minutes remaining, leading the Washington Capitals to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round series Friday night.

Carney wins it in overtime for Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - With the young Minnesota Wild on the ropes, old man Keith Carney came through just in time. Carney scored on a slap shot 14 seconds into overtime to lift the Wild to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night, tying the series 1-1 and giving a huge sigh of relief to more than 19,000 towel-waving fans.
