TORONTO (AP) - Stephen Walkom was hired Wednesday as NHL director of officiating. Walkom became an NHL official in 1990 and has been one of the league's top referees for the last several years. He worked the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2002 and 2004 Stanley Cup finals.
