Lightning top Isles in marathon shootout

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Dmitry Afanasenkov scored the lone shootout goal in the seventh round, leading the Tampa Bay Lightning past the New York Islanders 3-2 on Friday night. Lightning goalie Johan Holmqvist, who stopped 29 shots in regulation, didn't allow a goal during the shootout. He earlier made a glove save on an in-close shot by Viktor Kozlov with 42.8 seconds left in the third.
 
Afinogenov returns to lift Sabres

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - It didn't take long for Maxim Afinogenov to regain his scoring touch. Afinogenov had a goal and an assist in his return from a shoulder injury and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 Friday night.
 
Stars' Stefan shines in Atlanta return

ATLANTA (AP) - Patrik Stefan played Friday night just like the Atlanta Thrashers expected him to when they made him the franchise's first draft pick in 1999. The only twist: Stefan no longer plays for the Thrashers. Stefan, traded to Dallas last summer, made the most of his return to Atlanta, getting his first goal and two assists of the season in the Stars' 5-3 win.

WASHINGTON (AP) - After a slow start to the season, Rod Brind'Amour and the rest of the Carolina Hurricanes are playing like, well, Stanley Cup champions. Brind'Amour had two goals and two assists to extend his point streak to seven games, and Erik Cole also had a hand in every score for Carolina in a 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Friday night.
 
Budaj shuts down Blue Jackets in 3-0 win

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Peter Budaj took full advantage of his first start since Nov. 2. Budaj made 25 saves for his third career shutout and the Colorado Avalanche beat the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets 3-0 Friday night to snap a four-game losing streak.
 
Flyers win 4-3 stunner over Kings

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A West Coast trip was just what the Philadelphia Flyers needed to save their season. R.J. Umberger scored the tying and go-ahead goals 2 1/2 minutes apart, capping a three-goal rally in the third period and lifting the Flyers to a stunning 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
 
Oilers beat Blues to open long homestand

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Ryan Smyth's knee looked just fine. Smyth scored twice and Ales Hemsky tied a career high with three assists as the Edmonton Oilers started a seven-game homestand with a 6-2 victory against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.
 
Wild stage big rally to nick Predators

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A three-goal lead wasn't big enough for the Nashville Predators, who couldn't hold off the hard-charging Minnesota Wild. The Predators got it to a shootout, but Brian Rolston's goal was the difference in the tiebreaker as the Wild escaped with a 7-6 victory Thursday night.
 
Coyotes finally win consecutive games

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - It took six weeks and 18 games, but Curtis Joseph and the Phoenix Coyotes finally posted consecutive victories. Yanic Perrault and Ladislav Nagy scored in the shootout and Joseph stopped two of three shots in the tiebreaker in the Phoenix Coyotes' 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.
