LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - D.C. United came out strong and unintimidated against the champions of English soccer. A monumental upset actually seemed possible. Then United scored. United 1, Chelsea 0. Loud chants of "D.C." echoed among the 31,473 fans.

Anschutz sells D.C. United to local group

WASHINGTON (AP) - Billionaire soccer fan Philip Anschutz is reducing the number of MLS teams he controls from five to four with the sale of D.C. United, a move officials hope will help expedite construction of a new stadium for the four-time league champions.

Genoa disciplined for match-fixing

MILAN, Italy (AP) - Genoa, Italy's oldest soccer club, was relegated Wednesday from Serie A to the third division for match-fixing. The Italian soccer league's disciplinary commission found the club guilty of sporting fraud for fixing its final match of last season against Venezia. Genoa won 3-2 and was promoted from Serie B to Italy's top league.

Crew edges past Fulham in exhibition game

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Brian McBride said it was strange being on the other side at Crew Stadium. The forward who left MLS for the English Premier League last year, played a scoreless second half for Fulham on Wednesday night in a 2-1 exhibition loss to his former team, the Columbus Crew.
