Stanford ends UConn's NCAA dominance 76-59

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Women's basketball will have a new champion this year _ finally. Connecticut's remarkable run is over. Stanford made all the right plays down the stretch and got 21 points from freshman sensation Candice Wiggins to beat Connecticut 76-59 on Sunday night in the semifinals of the Kansas City Regional.
 
Illini show mettle in reaching Final Four

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) - Deron Williams looked up at the scoreboard, frowned and shook his head. Down 15 with only four minutes to go, Illinois' season of triumph was about to slip away. All those victories, that near-perfect record, a path to the Final Four that seemed tailor-made for the Illini _ none of it would matter. They'd be just another one of those teams that had teetered on the verge of greatness.

Shortly after the men reached the Final Four on Sunday with a dramatic double-overtime victory over Kentucky, Kristin Haynie had a triple-double and led Michigan State's women past Vanderbilt 76-64 in the semifinals of the Kansas City Regional.

Michigan State beats Kentucky in double OT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Michigan State recovered from Kentucky's 3-point prayer that sent the game into overtime, taking over in the second extra session and pulling away for a 94-88 victory Sunday to cap a weekend filled with heart-stopping finishes. The Spartans are headed to their fourth Final Four in seven years, and will face North Carolina on Saturday.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Kentucky's 3-point prayer bounced on the rim four times before falling through, and everybody held their breath during a five-minute review. It was a 3-pointer, all right, forcing overtime. But Michigan State reclaimed the momentum in time to force a second extra session, earning the Spartans a trip to the Final Four _ their fourth in seven years _ with their trademark withering defense.
 
Carolina tops Wisconsin to make Final Four

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Rashad McCants made the big plays down the stretch, Sean May dominated inside and North Carolina is back in the Final Four for the first time in five years. McCants swished a clutch 3-pointer and had two huge blocks on the other end, leading the top-seeded Tar Heels to an 88-82 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday in the final of the Syracuse Regional.
 
Minnesota wins NCAA women's hockey title

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Now it's the North Carolina women's turn. Just like Connecticut a year ago, the Tar Heels could win both of college basketball's biggest prizes. The men made it to the Final Four by beating Wisconsin on Sunday. The North Carolina women can do the same with a victory over Baylor in the Tempe Regional final Monday night.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Shyra Ely scored 23 points and led the top-seeded Lady Vols into their 20th regional final with a 75-59 win over Texas Tech on Sunday. The Lady Vols (29-4) will play Rutgers in the Philadelphia Regional on Tuesday night for a trip to the Final Four in Ely's hometown of Indianapolis.
 
Rutgers women shut down Ohio State 64-58

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rutgers let Ohio State All-American Jessica Davenport get her points, but shut down the rest of the Buckeyes with tenacious defense. Now the Scarlet Knights are just one win away from their first Final Four appearance in five years. Cappie Pondexter scored 24 points, and Rutgers turned 15 Ohio State turnovers into 22 points in posting a 64-58 victory on Sunday.
 
Young leads Baylor past Minnesota 64-57

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Sophia Young's day was special hours before Baylor tipped off against Minnesota in the Tempe Regional semifinals. Young followed an emotional reunion with her mother by almost single-handedly leading the Lady Bears to the NCAA tournament's round of eight for the first time, scoring 26 points and grabbing seven rebounds in a 64-57 victory over Minnesota on Saturday night.
 
UConn faces major challenge vs. Stanford

But a game against the nation's No. 1-ranked team in the regional semifinals? No, the Huskies haven't seen anything like this since they burst onto the national scene with their first NCAA title in 1995.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - LSU showed again why it is good to be the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Lady Tigers posted their third straight blowout victory against an overmatched opponent, this time beating 13th-seeded Liberty 90-48 Saturday to reach the Chattanooga Regional final. The 42-point margin of victory was the second-largest in regional semifinal history, behind Louisiana Tech's 44-point win over Purdue in 1990.
 
North Carolina outguns Arizona St. 79-72

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Arizona State had the home crowd roaring and the 3-point shots falling, at least for a while. That wasn't enough against the quick, strong Tar Heels of North Carolina, who beat the scrappy Sun Devils 79-72 in the semifinals of the Tempe Regional on Saturday night.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Tom Izzo can look down the Michigan State bench and smile. Even when his five starters are on the court, he still has four guys he's comfortable using. Pretty impressive, even for one of the final eight teams in the NCAA tournament. Yet it's still not as good as Kentucky's depth.
 
Louisville tops WVU in overtime thriller

In the end, it was hobbling Taquan Dean, tenacious Larry O'Bannon and the Cardinals who wound up with a ticket to the Final Four, rallying from 20 points down for a scintillating 93-85 overtime win Saturday in the Albuquerque Regional final.
 
Illinois roars back to catch Arizona in OT

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) - Keep the bus running and point it toward St. Louis. Thanks to a jaw-dropping comeback, Illinois' journey has another leg left: the Final Four. With Deron Williams leading the way, the Illini staged an electrifying and improbable rally to force overtime and then held on to beat Arizona 90-89 Saturday night to win the Chicago Regional.
