HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun has been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame, The Associated Press learned Friday. Calhoun was told Thursday that he was elected, according to a source close to the coach who spoke on condition of anonymity. Calhoun was one of 16 finalists for this year's class, which will be formally announced Monday at the Final Four in St. Louis.

The Weber family has crisscrossed the Midwest for the last three weeks, watching one brother, David, win a state high school championship, while another, Bruce, takes his team to the NCAA Final Four. It's been a balm for their grief, a tribute to the mother whose greatest joy was watching her sons coach.

The 7-footer grew up in Australia with a passion for the game nurtured by his parents, both natives of Croatia. The desire to test himself against the best convinced Bogut to attend college in the United States, a stint at Utah that lasted two years and was capped Friday by his selection as The Associated Press player of the year.

NEW YORK (AP) - Carlos Powell's final collegiate game went better than Pat Carroll's. Tarence Kinsey drilled a 3-pointer from the right elbow with 1.3 seconds remaining Thursday night to give Powell and South Carolina their first NIT championship, 60-57 over Saint Joseph's.
 
Roehrig, Shimek balance Mich. St. attack
