The sophomore point guard had seven assists after being sidelined for almost the entire preseason because of a foot injury, while freshman Brian Zoubek scored 18 points to lead the Blue Devils past Columbia 86-43 on Sunday night in the CBE Classic.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Alando Tucker and Kammron Taylor were too much for Mercer. Taylor scored 22 points and Tucker added 21 as No. 9 Wisconsin beat the Bears 72-48 Sunday in the season opener for both teams. Mercer coach Mark Slonaker said his team is used to playing before 1,200 people a game and lost to a Division II school during preseason play, so he knew it would be tough to go into the Kohl Center, where Wisconsin is 35-3 in non-conference games under Bo Ryan.
 
No. 4 Pitts wins as Dixon is honored

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - The first victory of what is expected to be a special season at Pittsburgh was overshadowed by a postgame ceremony. About 30 minutes after the fourth-ranked Panthers beat Western Michigan 86-67 on Sunday in the inaugural Maggie Dixon Classic, the woman for whom the event is named was honored.
 
Trojans bounce back in BCS standings

NEW YORK (AP) - Southern California bounced back in the Bowl Championship Series standings. The Trojans were in third place, right behind Ohio State and Michigan, in the standings released Sunday, returning to the spot they held before losing three weeks ago. Southern California had a slight lead over fourth-place Florida, and Notre Dame, unbeaten Rutgers and Arkansas also were close behind.
 
No. 11 Boilermakers crush Purdue 83-51

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds as No. 11 Purdue beat Hartford 83-51 Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Preseason WNIT. Wisdom-Hylton, a junior forward, also had five assists, three blocks and two steals. Jodi Howell scored a career-high 16 points, Erin Lawless scored 15 points and FahKara Malone had 15 points and seven steals for the Boilermakers.
 
No. 21 Cal tops Saint Mary's 71-56

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists to lead No. 21 California past Saint Mary's 71-56 Sunday. Ashley Walker scored 15 points for the Bears (1-0) while Lauren Greif and Krista Foster each had 11. Monica Mertle led Saint Mary's with 14 points and Maija Lahde had 13.

(AP) - Caroline Williams scored 21 points, including a clutch 3-pointer, and Carla Thomas had 26 points and seven rebounds as No. 16 Vanderbilt survived a scare to defeat Colorado 81-76 on Sunday. Christina Wirth added 14 points for Vanderbilt (1-0), which is unbeaten in four games with Colorado.
 
Lady Vols slam Chattanooga 102-72

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee's Candace Parker opened the season by giving the home crowd something new to cheer about. Parker dunked for the third time in her career during the fifth-ranked Lady Vols' 102-72 victory Sunday over Chattanooga, and the first time in Thompson-Boling Arena. She is the fourth woman to dunk in a college game.
 
Mosby powers No. 19 Baylor over Hofstra

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - An impressive performance by Ohio State put a damper on a special day for the Army women's basketball team. Jessica Davenport scored 16 of her 22 points in the first half to help No. 7 Ohio State beat Army 77-41 on Sunday in the inaugural Maggie Dixon Classic.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Pete Carroll must have had a vision. Southern California's 33-31 loss at Oregon State two weeks ago appeared to have eliminated the Trojans from national championship contention, but afterward, Carroll said it was too early to make such a declaration. Apparently the USC coach knew what he was talking about, because a glut of upsets have thrust the Trojans back into the thick of the race.
 
No. 1 Terps unveil banner, then win big

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Top-ranked Maryland unfurled its national championship banner, then staged an impressive performance reminiscent of its play a year ago. Kristi Toliver and Ashleigh Newman each scored 16 points, and the Terrapins rolled to a 99-43 rout of George Mason on Sunday. Toliver had 10 points during a 22-0 run that put Maryland (2-0) up 43-15 in the first half. The margin swelled to 40 points with 13:34 left, and 50 with 7:14 to go.
 
No. 13 Sun Devils down No. 18 Lobos

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Briann January scored 14 points and had four steals to lead No. 13 Arizona State past No. 18 New Mexico 67-49 Sunday. The Sun Devils (2-0) used an 11-0 run in the first three minutes of the second half to pull away. Brandi Kimble had 14 points and Julie Briody added 12 for the Lobos (1-1).
 
Army's late women's coach is honored

(AP) - Eight months ago, Maggie Dixon was carried around the court at Christl Arena by the cadets after leading the Army women's basketball team to its first Patriot League championship and NCAA tournament appearance. On Sunday, between games of the inaugural Maggie Dixon Classic, the late coach was honored with a simple ceremony on that same court attended by hundreds of cadets from the school she captivated in a seven-month stay.
 
Hoosiers upset No. 15 Wildcats 54-51

(AP) - Jamie Braun scored 18 points, including the final seven by her team, to lead Indiana to a 54-51 victory over No. 15 Kentucky on Sunday for the championship of the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament. Wake Forest (1-1) beat Washington State (0-2) 45-37 in the consolation game of the four-team tournament.
 
No. 9 Bulldogs make Landers' day sweeter

It was a routine move, but another successful one in a career that will land him in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. Freshman Ashley Houts and Janese Hardrick each scored 18 points and were key in beating Rutgers' press as No. 9 Georgia overcame a late rally for a 78-69 win Sunday.
 
Judge gives injunction over UND nickname

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A district judge has granted a preliminary injunction to stop the NCAA from banning the University of North Dakota from hosting a postseason game because of its "Fighting Sioux" nickname, state Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said.

Mike Cook, a transfer from East Carolina making his debut with the Panthers after sitting out last season, was 7-for-11 from the field and had 17 points to lead five scorers in double figures.
 
USC beats mistake-prone Oregon St. 35-10

The Longhorns' star quarterback injured his right shoulder on the play and was done for the night. And now so are Texas' chances of repeating as national champions. Josh Freeman threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score to lead the Wildcats to a 45-42 victory over No. 4 Texas on Saturday night.
 
LSU still alive after win over Alabama

(AP) - With a shake of one of his tree-trunk legs, JaMarcus Russell left an Alabama pass rusher flat on his face, turning a would-be sack into another chance to showcase his powerful right arm. The 6-foot-6, 257-pound Russell foiled the upset-minded Crimson Tide all night with his fancy footwork and three TD passes, helping No. 12 LSU keep its slim hopes for an SEC West title alive with a 28-14 victory Saturday night.
 
McFadden carries Razorbacks over Vols

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas had just wrapped up a surprisingly easy win over Tennessee, and the Razorbacks' fans started chanting. "BCS! BCS! BCS!" The Razorbacks are making it hard to argue with them. On a day several other top teams struggled, No. 11 Arkansas had no trouble with No. 13 Tennessee.
 
Bobby Bowden suffers first home shutout

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Wake Forest made history and picked up a few more believers in the process. Kevin Patterson scored on a 48-yard interception return and the 18th-ranked Demon Deacons beat Florida State 30-0 Saturday night to become the first team to shut out the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Bobby Bowden's 31 seasons as coach.
