Phelps edges Crocker in 100 butterfly

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Michael Phelps wasn't as generous this time around. Phelps, who yielded his spot on the U.S. gold medal 400-meter medley relay to Ian Crocker at the Olympic Games last summer, caught his longtime friend and rival at the finish and won the 100 butterfly Sunday night at the U.S. trials for the world championships in July.

China sweeps diving Grand Prix

BEIJING (AP) - China dominated the finals of the FINA diving Grand Prix on Sunday, with 15-year-old Zhang Chen beating Olympic champion and countryman Hu Jia for his first gold medal in the men's platform. The Chinese women took first and second in the springboard event.

And then he pours on the praise, thanking everyone and everything that had anything to do with his most recent success. The trainer was at it again after High Fly won Saturday's Florida Derby and stablemate Noble Causeway finished second in their final preps before the Kentucky Derby on May 7.

Pontiff was sportsman as well as leader

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope John Paul II was an avid sportsman, and perhaps the most athletic pontiff in history. While memories of the pope on skis or hiking through the Italian Alps contrast greatly with more recent images of him struggling with debilitating illnesses, John Paul was a vibrant participant in physical activities much of his life.
