Giacomo upsets field to win Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Giacomo, a 50-1 shot, defied the odds and won the $2.4 million Kentucky Derby in a gigantic upset Saturday, running down a game Afleet Alex in the final strides and generating a huge payoff.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Front runners and speed could make for a contentious Kentucky Derby. Twenty horses will break from the starting gate at Churchill Downs on Saturday, and "there are eight to 10 horses who can win," three-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert said.

Gatlin wins 100 meters at Japan Grand Prix

OSAKA, Japan (AP) - The wind in his face and a twinge in his leg only slowed Justin Gatlin a little. Gatlin, the Olympic gold medalist, won the men's 100 meters Saturday at the IAAF Japan Grand Prix, finishing in 10.15 seconds at Nagai Stadium.

Bailey guides Summerly to Oaks upset

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Jerry Bailey proved in the Kentucky Oaks that he still has a few winning rides remaining. The 47-year-old Hall of Fame jockey was ready to retire last fall, but looked as skilled as ever guiding Summerly to a two-length victory Friday in the Grade 1, $500,000-added race for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs.
