DENVER (AP) - Britain's Jamie Bestwick won the BMX Vert competition in his Dew Action Sports Tour debut and Oklahoman Kenny Bartram topped the FMX field Saturday night in the Right Guard Open at the Pepsi Center.

Karl Meltzer wins third Hardrock 100

SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) - Karl Meltzer became the first three-time men's champion of the Hardrock 100 on Saturday, finishing 93 minutes ahead of defending champion Paul Sweeney in one of the world's most difficult ultramarathons.

Lava Man wins Hollywood Gold Cup in a romp

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Lava Man took the lead on the far turn and went on to a record-setting 8 3/4-length victory Saturday in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup. The 4-year-old gelding earned his first Grade 1 victory nearly two months after running in a claiming race where his owners could have lost him for $100,000.

Armstrong's team lags but Lance prevails

GERARDMER, France (AP) - Lance Armstrong looked around for help and found none. He was alone, on a Tour de France climb, his rivals swarming all over him. Armstrong's usually trusty teammates failed him Saturday in the first encounter with the mountains, unable to match the punishing pace set on the day's final ascent by riders determined to bring down the six-time champion.
