HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - No more silver for Adam Nelson. At last, he has gold. After second-place finishes in two Olympics, two outdoor world championships and one indoor world meet, Nelson won the shot put competition on Saturday night with his best throw in three years _ 71 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

Michael Phelps wins 27th national title

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Michael Phelps defeated training partner Klete Keller by nearly a half-second to win the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Summer Nationals on Friday night. It was Phelps' 27th national individual title, moving him into a tie for seventh on the career list with Katherine Rawls, who competed from 1931-38. He said he plans to swim the 400 freestyle relay Saturday and skip Sunday's events.
 
Women's steeplechase makes world debut

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - The women's steeplechase made its world track and field championships debut Saturday. Docus Inzikuru of Uganda had the fastest time in the first round of the 3,000-meter race, finishing in 9 minutes, 27.85 seconds. Fifteen runners qualified for the final, which will be raced Monday.
 
Johnson sees stiff competition for title

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - Other than a few flecks of gray, Allen Johnson shows no signs that age is gaining on him. Dean of the mostly young U.S. track team, the 34-year-old hurdler will be seeking a fifth world championship next week in Helsinki. No one will be surprised if he does.
