Americans start anew in gymnastics

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Paul Hamm is cracking the books, Carly Patterson is nursing a back injury and Blaine Wilson is hanging up his grips. One year after hauling in nine medals at the Athens Olympics, the Americans are starting over at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships this week. Gone are the familiar names of the last four _ or more _ years. In their place is a new crop of up-and-comers who will be charged with keeping the Americans' successful run going.
 
Blaine Wilson retires from gymnastics

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Olympic silver medalist Blaine Wilson's voice caught and shook, and tears filled his eyes. He's been the poster boy for grit and determination for more than a decade, enduring injuries that should have ended his career, seven operations and long separations from his wife and daughter, all in a quest to put U.S. men's gymnastics back on the podium. When it was finally time to say goodbye, though, his trademark toughness dissolved.
 
Jackson leads 1-2 U.S. 400-hurdle finish

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - Batman didn't let a little rain slow him down. Bershawn Jackson, who earned his nickname as a kid because he had ears like a bat's and was so fast he seemed to fly, splashed to victory in the 400-meter hurdles Tuesday night, leading a 1-2 U.S. finish at the world track and field championships.
