Spies sets record in Superbike qualifying

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - Ben Spies turned a record lap of 1 minute, 23.374 seconds on the 2.36-mile, 21-turn California Speedway motorcycle road course Friday to earn the provisional pole for the Suzuki Superbike Challenge AMA Superbike doubleheader.

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - Kyle Petty said Friday his Petty Enterprises team suddenly finds itself short one sponsor. Petty said the unnamed company had signed on to be the primary sponsor on his No. 45 Dodge for eight races this year, joining other partial sponsors Wells Fargo, Schwan's and Coca-Cola in filling up the 36-race Cup schedule.
