Tiny rare owl spotted in Peru reserve

LIMA, Peru (AP) - An extremely rare species of tiny owl has been seen in the wild for the first time, the American Bird Conservancy said Thursday. The long-whiskered owlet, one of the world's smallest owls, was discovered in 1976. Researchers have caught a few specimens in nets after dark but had not seen it in nature.

Md.: State workers spread trout disease

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - State fishery workers unwittingly spread a fatal fish illness by moving diseased fish from one facility to another, officials said. The state Department of Natural Resources previously said the parasite that causes whirling disease, which is fatal to some trout, might have been spread by mud on the feet of birds or bears.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The story of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, the first sub to sink an enemy warship, is leading back to the Old World as researchers plan to spend weeks trying to discover the roots of four European crewmen. Scientists also said Thursday they have recovered a second coin from the hand-cranked sub _ a silver dime to go along with a $20 gold piece recovered in 2001.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A Bengal tiger that once worked on the carnival circuit was recovering after undergoing surgery to correct a badly deformed right forelimb. The tiger named Sulley had been abused as a cub.

Feds drop Yellowstone grizzly from list

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Grizzly bears in and around Yellowstone National Park no longer need Endangered Species Act protection, the federal government said Thursday. The area had an estimated 136 to 312 grizzlies when the species was listed as threatened in 1975, but has more than 500 of the bears today, the government said.
