Study examines flight of hummingbirds

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Not much bigger than a honey bee, the tiny hummingbird is able to hover gently over a flower because it uses some of the same wing motion as an insect _ but not as much as previously thought, a new study says.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The chirp of the chickadee is charming to humans. To other chickadees, it can convey a lot of vital information. When the little black-capped songbird whistles "chick-a-dee-dee" it can warn flock mates to watch out: A predator is near.

Scientists studying Gulf's 'dead zone'

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Through mid-July, scientists from NOAA's National Coast Data Development Center and the agency's Fisheries Service at Stennis Space Center will look at data about dissolved oxygen from the "dead zone" areas in the Gulf of Mexico.

Cloning pioneer honored in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - The South Korean government on Friday named cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-suk as the nation's "top scientist," an honor that will grant him as much as 3 billion won ($3 million) in annual funding for five years.
