Telescope gives deepest view of space

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Astronomers believe they've glimpsed light from some of the universe's first stars through the world's largest telescope on the Big Island. The astronomy team from the California Institute of Technology, which was to present its findings in London on Wednesday, said they used the Keck II telescope atop Mauna Kea volcano to see farther into space than ever before.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - It's no laughing matter: a new study suggests older adults have a harder time getting jokes as they age. The research indicates that because older adults may have greater difficulty with cognitive flexibility, abstract reasoning and short-term memory, they also have greater difficulty with tests of humor comprehension.

(AP) - It has all the makings of a potential rangeland disaster _ thousands of acres of green grass, herds of cattle, antelope and other animals that need to eat versus an emerging army of spiky caterpillars with voracious appetites. But ranchers are hopeful their quick action will take care of the caterpillars _ also known as range worms _ before they can wreak havoc on pastures in northeastern New Mexico.

LONDON (AP) - Scientists want Internet users to help them sort through an unusual digital photo album: pictures of about 1 million galaxies. In a Web statement Wednesday, astronomers asked for volunteers to help classify the galaxies, identifying them as either elliptical or spiral, and noting, where possible, in which direction they rotate.
