Scientists: Hobbit wasn't a modern human

WASHINGTON (AP) - Scientists, wringing their hands over the identity of the famed "hobbit" fossil, have found a new clue in the wrist. Since the discovery of the bones in Indonesia in 2003, researchers have wrangled over whether the find was an ancient human ancestor or simply a modern human suffering from a genetic disorder.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Long thought to be purebred, the wild bison of Santa Catalina Island in fact have a little bit of cow in them, the first DNA analysis of the animals found. Nearly half of the 98 American bison shipped off the island in 2004 have cattle genes that were passed on through the mother. Catalina bison were believed to be purer than those on the mainland because they lived in isolation on the island since the 1920s.

NASA revives probe to study black holes

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - NASA on Friday resurrected a mission to launch a high-energy X-ray telescope into orbit to conduct a black hole census. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or Nustar, was canceled last year because of budget constraints. Nustar, now scheduled for launch in 2011, will fly two years before the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the aging Hubble Space Telescope.

Rare hummingbird spotted in Wisconsin

BELOIT, Wis. (AP) - Birdwatchers are descending on a rural area near this southern Wisconsin community following the sighting of what is believed to be a green-breasted mango, a type of hummingbird commonly seen in parts of Mexico and Central America.

Utah officials alarmed over bullfrogs

ROOSEVELT, Utah (AP) - Utah wildlife officials are alarmed over the presence of American bullfrogs. Acting on a tip from a golfer, biologists confirmed the frogs were in a pond at Roosevelt Golf Course. They have moved elsewhere in the Uinta Basin in eastern Utah, 150 miles east of Salt Lake City.

India zoo tries to save orphan elephant

BHUBANESWAR, India (AP) - Veterinarians at a zoo in eastern India struggled Friday to save an orphaned baby elephant who was injured when a train killed his mother, officials said. The four-month-old elephant was brought to the Nandankanan Zoo in the city of Bhubaneswar with light injuries, but his chances of surviving without his mother were estimated at 50 percent, said zoo director Ajit Patnaik.

NASA replaces leaky seal on Discovery
