Vietnam confirms bird flu outbreak

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - Thousands of poultry died of bird flu in the past two weeks in southern Vietnam, the government said Wednesday, in the country's first reported outbreak in a year.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday withdrew its proposal to list as threatened a wildflower that grows only in areas of Utah and Colorado where oil shale and tar sand exploration are being done.

HOUSTON (AP) - The shuttle Discovery backed away from the international space station and started a two-day journey home after its crew bade farewell to the residents of the orbiting outpost and left behind U.S. astronaut Suni Williams for a six-month stay.

Lawsuit seeks to sheild Alaska sea otter

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A conservation group, alarmed at a decrease in the number of sea otters in southwest Alaska, filed a lawsuit in federal court on Tuesday to try to compel the government to designate critical habitat to help the endangered species recover.

Feds to start removing wolf protections

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday his agency will start removing federal protections from gray wolves in Montana and Idaho by January, regardless of whether Wyoming has submitted an acceptable plan to manage its own wolves by then.

2 invasive species found in S.C. waters

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Two new invasive species have recently been found along the South Carolina coast _ a massive barnacle that dwarfs those found in the state as well as the Asian green mussel, which reproduces quickly and can pose a threat to floating docks.

WWF: 52 new species discovered on Borneo

GENEVA (AP) - Scientists have discovered at least 52 new species of animals and plants on the southeast Asian island of Borneo since 2005, including a catfish with protruding teeth and suction cups on its belly to help it stick to rocks, WWF International said Tuesday.
