Antioxidants don't help you live longer

CHICAGO (AP) - Antioxidant vitamins taken by tens of millions of people around the world won't lead to a longer life, according to an analysis of dozens of studies that adds to evidence questioning the value of the popular supplements. The large review of separate studies on thousands of people found no long-life benefit from vitamins A, E and C and beta carotene and selenium.

Scientists tout new prostate cancer test

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon scientists say a simple test can identify men at high risk of life-threatening prostate cancer even after a biopsy finds no signs of it. The key, researchers say, is "PSA density," which compares the size of a man's prostate with his levels of a cancer-related protein called prostate-specific antigen.
 
New scans may speed chest pain diagnosis

WASHINGTON (AP) - Millions of people with chest pain enter emergency room limbo, spending up to 24 hours waiting for tests to tell if a heart attack really is brewing or if it's something less dire. A computerized heart scan may start easing the wait, giving doctors a faster picture of clogged arteries to help determine who can go home _ within just four hours _ and who needs more care. If these souped-up CT scans pan out _ and major studies of several thousand chest-pain sufferers are to begin
 
Study: Garlic won't lower cholesterol

CHICAGO (AP) - Garlic doesn't do much for the breath and it stinks for lowering cholesterol. That's the conclusion of the most rigorous, head-to-head study of raw garlic and popular garlic supplements, despite promoters' claims to the contrary.
