Diabetes care improved over last decade

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Far fewer Americans with diabetes are ending up in emergency rooms or developing kidney failure _ a sign that diabetes care has improved dramatically over the last decade, the government reported Saturday.

Apartheid-era heart surgeon Naki dies

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Hamilton Naki, a former gardener who was so skilled in complicated surgery that he helped in the world's first heart transplant _ but had to keep his work secret in apartheid South Africa _ has died. He was 78.

Insurer pushes pill-splitting savings

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) - The nation's second-largest health insurer, UnitedHealthcare, is giving away away pill-splitters and offering half-price on drugs for those who split double-strength pills, cutting the patient's insurance copayment in half. The company is also providing advice on which drugs can be safely cut in half.
