Study links blood sugar to newborn risks

CHICAGO (AP) - The higher a pregnant woman's level of blood sugar, the greater the risk to her newborn _ whether the mother has diabetes or not, the largest study on the problem suggests. The findings released Friday may lead to more women being diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy and given stricter diet advice or medication to lower blood sugar.
 
Surgeon removes gall bladder from mouth

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon surgeon has performed gall bladder surgery that removes the organ through the patient's mouth _ the latest example of surgeries that avoid major incisions and rely on the body's own orifices instead.
 
New treatment promising for Parkinson's

NEW YORK (AP) - An experimental treatment for Parkinson's disease seemed to improve symptoms _ dramatically so, for one 59-year-old man _ without causing side effects in an early study of a dozen patients. The gene therapy treatment involved slipping billions of copies of a gene into the brain to calm overactive brain circuitry.
 
FDA issues new safety rules for vitamins

WASHINGTON (AP) - For the first time, manufacturers of vitamins, herbal pills and other dietary supplements will have to test all of their products' ingredients. The Food and Drug Administration said Friday it is phasing in a new rule that is designed to address concerns that existing regulations allowed supplements onto the market that were contaminated or didn't contain ingredients claimed on the label.
 
Court: University owns research samples

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of a university that sued a prominent researcher after he tried to take a collection of lab specimens with him when he moved to another institution.
