Mendez, Cruz Lead Niagara to NCAA Tourney

Tuesday, March 15, 2005 9:04:56 AM
By JOHN WAWROW

LEWISTON, N.Y. (AP) - Niagara point guard Alvin Cruz laughs, recalling when he first met Juan Mendez, who was taking 3-point shots on an outdoor court in central Florida.

"He was just a tall skinny guy," Cruz said of the Purple Eagles center.

"Wasn't that something?" Mendez said. "I was hitting bank shots from 3-point-land and they were making fun of me because they thought I couldn't play basketball."
