LOME, Togo (AP) - Togo's main opposition parties have united behind a 75-year-old former independence leader as their presidential candidate in next month's elections, joining forces in hopes of keeping the late dictator's son from winning the post.
The six parties nominated Bob Akitani, deputy chairman of the influential United Forces for Change party, to stand in April 24 elections aimed at moving the West African nation beyond its political crisis, coalition members said late Monday.
Akitani will face Faure Gnassingbe, who briefly held power after his father's death last month but stepped down amid protests. A separate opposition party will field its own candidate.
