NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Police used rubber bullets, batons, tear gas and water cannons to break up a peaceful demonstration Wednesday by protesters who accuse the government of trying to dilute a draft constitution that would curb presidential powers.
Some 200 protesters marched on parliament on the opening day of its new session, but were stopped by police before they could reach the building in downtown Nairobi, where legislators gathered to consider an amendment to the proposed charter.
"The parliament has no right to amend the constitution. The constitution belongs to the people, let's go to a referendum," read yellow banners carried by the protesters.
