Schilling Pessimistic About Opening Day

Wednesday, March 16, 2005 2:37:17 PM
By HOWARD ULMAN

Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling delivers a throw during a simulated game in Fort Myers, Fla., Wednesday March 16, 2005. Schilling, who is recovering from ankle surgery, threw about 60 pitches. Schilling is expected to testify before Congress on Thursday after being subpoena to testify before the House Government Reform Committee, who are examining steroid use. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Curt Schilling doesn't expect to start on opening day after he threw Wednesday to Red Sox batters in a simulated game.

He threw 63 pitches before Boston's game against the St. Louis Cardinals and said he made progress. But time is running out since the Red Sox have just two weeks left in the exhibition season and he hasn't pitched in a game.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said it would be a surprise if Schilling pitched the opener on April 3 against the Yankees in New York. Manager Terry Francona didn't think it was realistic that he'd pitch, either.
