UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Former President Clinton's one-time chief of staff was appointed deputy U.N. special envoy spearheading reconstruction in tsunami-devastated countries, Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced Wednesday.
Clinton was supposed to start his new job as U.N. special envoy this month, but he underwent surgery last week related to his heart bypass operation six months ago. He was expected to spend four to six weeks recovering.
Annan's appointment of Erskine Bowles as his deputy will put a high-ranking U.N. official in the field immediately. Bowles was immediately leaving for the region to assess the impact of the Dec. 26 tsunami which killed more than 170,000 people in 11 nations.
