BERLIN (AP) - A top government official promised that the worst soccer violence in the country since 2000 will not prevent Germany from hosting a peaceful World Cup next year.
German fans vandalized downtown Celja on Saturday before their team's 1-0 victory over Slovenia. They then threw flares onto the field, tore out seats and fought with police and opposing fans in the stadium during the game.
"The police in 2006 will make sure that these violent troublemakers won't ruin the world's soccer celebration," German interior minister Otto Schilly said. "Our fans are peaceful and that's exactly how the World Cup will be."
