GLENSHAW, Pa. (AP) - A legislator was charged Wednesday with lying about a white powder he claimed was inside a letter mailed from a critical constituent, and with retaliating against and harassing those who questioned his political finances.
Republican state Rep. Jeffrey E. Habay, 38 who is awaiting trial on ethics charges in an unrelated case claimed he got the letter at home in May and that it had a suspicious white substance inside, raising fears of possible anthrax contamination.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service said the substance was harmless.
