CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - State and local officials are investigating a potential case of diphtheria, a deadly respiratory disease that occurs about five times a year in the United States.
Public health investigators were notified March 24 of a possible case of diphtheria involving an adult in Hamilton County. Donna Needham, a nurse at the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department that oversees infectious diseases, said she could not discuss specifics about the case including the patient's gender and age.
"It is very uncommon," she said.
