HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A government explosives expert testified Thursday that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms lacked written testing standards when it investigated a deadly abortion clinic blast allegedly carried out by Eric Rudolph.
The testimony came during a hearing in which Rudolph's defense is seeking to throw out test results that prosecutors say tie the serial bombing suspect to the 1998 blast. ATF forensic scientist Peter Dreifuss is the second expert from the agency to testify about a lack of written testing procedures.
U.S. District Judge C. Lynwood Smith Jr. seemed curious after hearing Dreifuss say the agency had only "non-written protocols" for conducting a certain type of explosives test in 1998.
