Nationals to Get First Look at New Home

Saturday, April 02, 2005 11:34:23 AM
By HOWARD FENDRICH

A view of RFK Stadium, the temporary home of the Washington Nationals, background, and the Capitol building, foreground, from the Washington Monument in this May 27, 2004 file photo. This may be the nation's most powerful city, but since 1971 when the Washington Senators departed it's been the baseball equivalent of a 98-pound weakling, never strong enough to convince the sport it deserved another team. The 34-year wait to root, root, root for the home team ends Sunday, when the newly minted Nationals play their first game in their hometown. It's just an exhibition, but that's good enough for long-suffering local fans who have been eagerly awaiting the return of Major League Baseball. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, Files)WASHINGTON (AP) - Frank Robinson knows RFK Stadium well, having played there as a visitor during his Hall of Fame career. He hit nine homers at the place, in fact. But few of his players on the Washington Nationals have ever seen the ballpark, other than in photos on the Internet.

They'll be able to check out their new digs in person Sunday, when the Nationals host the New York Mets in an exhibition game before taking to the road to start the regular season with series at Philadelphia and Florida. Sunday's game will be a dress rehearsal for the April 14 home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks — and a head start on building a home-field advantage.

"What it really does for us is give us a chance to see the new home, get on the field, see how it plays a little bit and get a little feel for it, rather than coming back on the 14th and having to go right into a ballgame that really counts," Robinson, the manager, said at the team's spring training home in Viera, Fla. "It's kind of a shakedown-type ballgame. Get the bugs out a little bit."
