Police Hold 2 Suspects in Brazil Massacre

Saturday, April 02, 2005 6:21:51 PM
By MICHAEL ASTOR

Relative of victims of a "massacre" protest holding a poster that reads "Police violence in our community" in front of the Sao Antonio church, in Nova Iguacu, Brazil, on Saturday, April 2, 2005. Elite police units searched two squalid suburbs Saturday as part of the investigation into Rio's bloodiest massacre in memory. Two suspects described as rogue police officers remained at large. Elite units of the Rio state police, aided by federal agents, set up road blocks and searched houses in an impoverished area known as the Baixada, a drab sprawl of towns on Rio's north side where the shootings took place. (AP Photo/Silvia Izquierdo) RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - Two police officers suspected in a shooting spree that left 30 people dead in Rio de Janeiro last week were detained Saturday after an intensive manhunt, authorities said.

State Gov. Rosinha Matheus also offered a $1,900 reward for information leading to the capture of the gunmen.

"We want this case to be rigorously investigated because it can't go unpunished," Matheus said Saturday on her weekly radio program. "As a mother I'm shocked. Only monsters are capable of that."
