ROME (AP) - All soccer games in Italy were called off for the first time in 10 years Sunday, with the country in mourning for Pope John Paul II. The front-page headline of Italy's top sports newspaper read: "The time for silence."
At the Formula One race in Bahrain, the nose cone of the two red Ferraris were black in a sign of mourning, and the top finishers refrained from the traditional celebratory spraying of champagne.
"The atmosphere is very strange to all of us," said Ferrari star Michael Schumacher, recalling the team's blessing by the pope during one of his last Vatican audiences. "You can't explain the emotions and the feeling on the team."
