SAN DIEGO (AP) - Sempra Energy is hosting one of the year's most closely watched shareholder meetings, but don't expect many investors to attend. That's because the company is gathering nearly 6,000 miles from its San Diego headquarters in London.
The choice of venue for Tuesday's meeting has raised eyebrows among corporate watchdogs and shareholder activists who suspect that the owner of two major Southern California utilities Southern California Gas Co. and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. may be trying to avoid tough questions.
Not so, says Doug Kline, a Sempra spokesman. The company wants to raise its profile with European investors and expose directors to its European operations, he said.
