SAN DIEGO (AP) - Xavier Nady, held out of the starting lineup because of strep throat, drew a bases-loaded walk in the 12th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in their home opener Thursday night.
Nady, who started in center field in San Diego's first two games, became ill Wednesday night after a win at Colorado. He came in to play center in the 10th and popped up weakly to the catcher that inning with runners on first and second.
In the 12th, he drew four straight balls from Rick White (0-1).
