UNITED NATIONS (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged Myanmar's military government Friday to set a timetable for democratic reforms, as members of the southeast Asian country's legal community said 38 military intelligence officers associated with a former regime were given long prison terms.
Frustration has been growing among Myanmar's neighbors and other countries over its rampant human rights abuses and slow pace of democratic reform.
The officers, linked to ousted Prime Minister Gen. Khin Nyunt, were sentenced Thursday by a special court in Yangon's Insein prison, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of concern for their safety.
