AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) - America's Cup sailor and designer Tom Schnackenberg has taken former Cup-holder Team New Zealand to court, claiming it is attempting to shut him out of the next regatta.
Schnackenberg has filed papers in the High Court, alleging Team New Zealand rehired him and then fired him specifically to prevent him from joining another team for the 2007 Cup defense off Valencia, Spain.
The 59-year-old sailor, a qualified nuclear physicist who has been described by Cup experts as a design genius, was fired by Team New Zealand's new management in December.
