MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Twins placed right-hander Carlos Silva on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a knee injury that should require surgery and keep him out at least until the All-Star break.
An MRI on Silva's knee showed he has a torn meniscus. Joe Mays will move up in the rotation and start in Silva's place on Tuesday, when left-hander Dave Gassner will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester and become the fifth starter.
Silva, who turns 26 later this month, was put on the DL retroactive to Thursday. This is a big blow for a contending team built solidly on its pitching staff.
