MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Tony Stevens was a shortstop in the Minnesota Twins' farm system for four years. Then the real work began. He left baseball in 2001 to join the Marines and has served two tours of duty in Iraq. He spent 130-degree days in the Sunni Triangle south of Baghdad and has survived 11 bomb blasts.
"It made minor league baseball seem like a mansion," said Stevens, who will be deployed to Afghanistan in November.
Stevens was at the Metrodome this weekend as a guest of the Twins. The 26-year-old shortstop drew a warm ovation from the crowd when introduced and threw out the first pitch before Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox. He was given a Twins uniform and took some batting practice before Saturday's game.
